ART AT THE RAINFOREST

The paintings at Rainforest Hideaway are the work of Mo Jean, a multi-media artist and designer and each picture has been created especially for the restaurant.

Mo paints in watercolours, oils and acrylics, in styles ranging from classically realistic to very modern abstracts. She also achieves some of her unique special effects by working with natural St Lucian products including hessian from trees, vines, calabashes, cocoa pods and bamboo.

Her art has been exhibited and sold worldwide but she is also a highly original interior designer, creating her own furniture and fabrics and her distinctive touch can be seen in some of St Lucia’s most prominent five star hotels.

Mo was born in England but she is also a St Lucian citizen, having fallen in love with the beauty of the island on her first visit.

“I was destined to be here,” she says, “I love the light and colour of this beautiful island and many years ago I had a dream which I sketched on a piece of paper without knowing what it meant.”  That sketch, now in her daughter’s possession, is a self portrait of herself inside a glass orb with two mountains, clearly the Pitons, entwined in a tangle of vines.

“At the time,” she remembers, “I didn’t even know about St Lucia or the Pitons, but now I realise what it meant.  Dreams are important to me and much of my work is inspired by my dreams.”

Mo’s love affair with St Lucia and her dreamwork continues, the demand for her work has grown in the past few years but, as she says, “when you do what you love and every day is different, nothing feels like work.”  Recently she has done a lot of specially commissioned pieces for visitors to the island who want to take an original memory home with them but for Mo, the sky’s the limit. “Challenge me!” she says, “If it’s something I’ve never done before I will love it – and so will you!”
